The NSWO team produced a very good concert on Saturday evening which explored a journey round Britain in music. The charity event raised a significant amount of money and was very successful. Both audience and organisers were delighted with the group's performance which was done under quite difficult circumstances in terms of placement, rehearsal time and acoustics.
The band coped well with any problems that arose from the layout and sound difficulties and in fact showed great maturity and professionalism in places.
The Phoenix band filled the stage area with 56 players on Saturday night for a concert of mainly british wind music.
The group worked hard to prepare a complex programme and at times sounded really good. There were some interesting moments but nothing that the group could not recover from. Some of the playing in the English Folk Dances was really musical and very well balanced. There were some good performances from the experienced players who lead Phoenix so well.
This piece has been revisited recently by NSWO and has had a few minor revisions done to tweak the scoring even further.
I am lucky to have Joe Curtis who is a professional when it comes to printing and the like, to produce new scores and parts so the piece will be available soon for other wind orchestras to try out. It is accessable to audiences whilst still providing sufficient challenge for a very good group. The CD of tiny radio announcements is available too.
Radio Days fits into a serious programme as well as a fairly entertaining one and although the music has an intentional air of nostalgia, it is innovative in parts as well.
