It was at the brief rehearsal last night when I realised the extent of the expansion of the Phoenix Concert Band. I think we need a bigger stage! We squeezed everyone on but not all sections could be seen.
The group had a difficult few moments when they discovered that the stage sounds totally different to the rehearsal room and more counting and concentration was needed. In the end the improvement was dramatic and the musicians adapted well to the room.
It was an evening full of variety and the sell out ensured that a lot of people enjoyed the programme. At the interval the catering proved as popular as ever and the second half had a jolly and festive atmosphere. I even conducted a little passage with a fairy wand, kindly provided by a fairy in the band.
Once again the concert went well and a lot of new music was appreciated by the regular listeners. The band is going from strength to strength, helped along by enthusiastic and energetic committee members. It does promise to make Friday equally successful in Armley.
Well done to all who put the effort into last night.
