On Friday the Phoenix Concert Band played in the truly wonderful setting of St Bartholomew's Church in Armley Leeds. The surrounding area is not the poshest part of Leeds but the church is stunning and it's supporters are an amazing group of friendly and welcoming people.
The group appreciated the welcome and played a concert full of all the musical elements that I value. This group is showing that it needs to be taken very seriously and it has really developed in 2008. The audience were treated to some very good playing and it was secure, flexible and musical.
Tonight was a horrible night weatherwise and the trip to Chesterfield was fraught with wind rain and spray on the motorway. The players who are Harlequin Brass seldom let me down and tonight they played with maturity, assurance and style. Another full house for a Christmas concert shared with a well rehearsed choir who knew how to programme a successful event.
We had a few supporters from YWO and NSWO and I really appreciated that; as did the group. I would have loved to stay on for drinks and curry afterwards but the past weeks have been tough with too many dinners taking place after 11.00pm. The roads were nasty and tirdness will not help the concentration required to drive through rain, sleet and freezing fog so I had to leave right after the concert.
All my concerts are done for 2008 now and I can't remember one that I didn't feel was in some way special. Let's give thanks for music; for enthusiasm and friends who play from the heart! For people who like to come along and listen, help, organise, support and perform. To Harlequin Brass, The Yorkshire Wind Orchestra, Phoenix Concert Band, Nottingham Symphonic Winds and the ensemble. Leeds College of Music Wind Orchestra and all my gnus at IGS...... Merry Christmas to you all.
