Last night the Phoenix Concert band played in the impressive setting of St. Barts in Armley Leeds. A large, appreciative audience were treated to a programme of English Music ranging from Elgar, Holst and Vaughan Williams to Adam Gorb and Ernest Tomlinson.
The group has had to work hard to prepare this programme and the hard work was worth the effort as the players rose to the occasion. It is always difficult to keep improving from concert to concert and things will always go wrong here and there but this group has to be taken seriously these days and as long as they have the desire to progress, they should flourish.
There were notable contributions from the soloists for whom it was a tough programme and they all played very well. The group played musically and tried very hard to maintain a good standard of balance and intonation.
There were two solo spots from the impressive organ and when it joined in with the band the tuning and timing were perfect; a tribute to the organist Dr Christopher Newton. The instrument sounded excellent and I could imagine doing a Wind/Brass/Choir and Organ concert there in the future.
Well done to all you players. I know I can get fussy and even grumpy but in the end it will be worth it.
